As reported in Arthritis and Rheumatism volume 58, page 2409, 2008, damage to the mitochondria of human chondrocyte cells results in increased levels of prostaglandin production.

Mitochondrial Dysfunction

Additional recent inflammation research supports mitochondrial dysfunction as the central, common, pathway for inflammation. So a treatment that stabilizes mitochondrial function can be soundly hypothesized as preventing cellular inflammation. Free Radicals

It is also widely accepted that oxidation of lipids and proteins in the body lead to inflammation. This is due to the formation of oxygen free radicals, which are negatively charged reactive oxygen species (ROS). If not detoxified, these ROS will go on to cause destruction and degradation in proteins, lipids and DNA/RNA. An increase in free radicals in tissue causes it to become inflamed. A cascade of pro-inflammatory events and chemical messengers are set in motion that attracts more immune cells into the area to fight the cause of the inflammation and to restore cellular order. The inflammation progresses until the problems are removed or repaired, or inflammation may progress until it causes cellular damage itself, resulting in cell death.

A Vicious Cycle

A key location for generating the oxygen-free radicals is the mitochondria. These organelles, due to the metabolic work of the cell, use a significant amount of oxygen for the oxidation and reduction reactions that take place within. When the mitochondria become damaged from the oxygen free radicals, one of the by-products is the formation of lipid-free radicals in the mitochondrial membrane. These in turn activate the prostaglandin system, which in turn activates and reacts to various inflammatory cytokines that are being released.
